Courtesy the Municipal Archives, here’s the corner of Willow and Orange Streets in 1937, looking east:

Looks like the trees were recently-planted then. And no potholes!

The MTA has installed a gate in front of the little enclave next to the elevator mezzanine in the Court Street R station, where throughout the spring a homeless man was making his bed. I’m not sure what kind of homelessness prevention tactics they’ve been reading up on but this strikes me as being rather out of touch with best practices.

Has the BHB finally fallen below the threshold of neighborhood participation? Or have those who usually comment here just all gone off to their summer vacations?

Yet another article, this time with many photos, showing the restored Bossert Hotel, and plans—maybe—for reopening soon:

I’ve wondered that too. If you go back to the site five years ago these threads would often have 50 to 100 or more comments a week. I hope it’s not a sign of larger disengagement from neighborhood issues (especially at a time when the threat to turn the Promenade into a six-lane highway remains).

I thought that was so odd!

“This just in: the Bossert Hotel is still not open.”

I was walking down Monroe Place a few days ago and saw a certain denizen, in his signature khaki windbreaker, who used to post here a lot more before he got himself banned so frequently I think he gave up coming back with new handles—he probably had a lot to do with the increased frequency of responses back then. He was reading a newspaper. Comment threads take a lot longer to upload that way.

The BHB used to issue regular e-mail alerts about what’s here—like Curbed, Brownstoner, the Eagle, etc., do—but when Homer died, he took the passwords to the grave. Claude could set up an announce-only Yahoo group, but hasn’t done that.

Last year I sent an e-mail to about 30 people in the Heights about reading stuff here. I don’t know if that brought any of therm to the site.

the nextdoor app has taken up a lot of local chat. unfortunately it’s mostly people looking for apartments or trying to sell stuff

  • Jorale-man

I know who you mean. ;) Him, along with Nabeguy, Willowtown Cop, Karl Junkersfeld, GHB and a few other regulars have perhaps moved onto other comment threads.

He posted the other day on the Pride month thread:

Nabeguy is no longer in the nabe; having moved to Nassau County. Karl still comments occasionally.

You and AEB responded to him appropriately, and he hasn’t seen fit to reply. As someone once observed, “The remedy for bad speech is more [and good] speech.”

Anyone else notice the London planes in Cadman are looking a little sickly this year?

  • http://www.yotamzohar.com StudioBrooklyn

I’m gonna slip in another request for someone (not me) to organize (or at least just decide on and openly invite) a BHB meet-up. Preferably somewhere that serves alcohol.

  • CassieVonMontague

london plane trees throughout the city look like they’re struggling. Moths? That hot summer two years ago?

  • Andrew Porter

I Googled “London Plane Tree Falling Leaves” and this explains why their leaves fall off in the summer—I thought it was a fungus; I was wrong!:

I don’t have a smartphone, so this is something I didn’t know about.

Thanks for notice. I can view inside of park from my apartment this year. Foliage is usually too thick to have that view until August. I wonder if park conservancy is aware?

This Gothamist suggests it could be a fungus. Not deadly, but not pretty either. http://gothamist.com/2016/08/01/fungus_among_us.php
