CB 2 Chairman Says DOT “Back to Square One” on BQE Plans

Kevin Duggan in The Broklyn Paper quotes Brooklyn Community Board 2 Chairman Lenny Singletary quoting City Department of Transportation officials as saying, at the closed door meeting with Community Board representatives a week ago, that

they moved away from the agency’s two initial plans proposed last fall — which would either turn the Brooklyn Heights Promenade into a six-lane speedway carrying cars and trucks for no less than six years in order to shore up the triple cantilever; or repair the three-tiered expressway lane-by-lane, a longer job that could cause traffic jams on some local streets for up to 12 miles — after residents demanded the city explore other options.

While those options are still under consideration, according to the Brooklyn Paper story, the DOT is considering others, including that proposed by the Brooklyn Heights Association and another by City Comptroller Scott Stringer.

Good news! Obviously there is more to come, but the discussion seems to be moving in a better direction and stakeholders all keeping open minds.

It looks interesting, but it would definitely come with new challenges like how to deal with rising sea levels and the next super storm Sandy that could possibly inundate the tunnel.

Another waste of time: Impossible to get that pipe dream past the TA Vents, 360 Furman etc. Not to mention, how would it make turn at the north end and connect back to the existing highway, LOL.

Well, there have been other waterfront tunnels built around the world (most recently in Seattle) and presumably engineers have dealt with these issues. That said, this plan seems short on cost estimates and such (at least that I could see). And it would require a major buy-in from the park authorities.
