    I am impressed. First, they are recreating the top two stories that were chopped off sometime after 1940 using terra cotta, slate and copper. Second, the new elevation is set back to hide it from the street.

    Yes, a magnificent building and, apparently, great reno. Unfortunately, however, the addition on top is as ugly as sin. An architect did this, really?

    The setback helps keep the ugly addition from being overly visible when viewed from the street right in front. But the addition will still stick out like a sore thumb among the skyline when viewed from lots of other places in the Heights and Downtown. (Their own presentation shows all these views…conveniently YIMBY omits these slides in its article but the full deck is available on the Landmarks website.)

    Solution? De-uglify the addition.

    I commented about this on YIMBY, pointed out that the plans are subject to Landmarks Commission oversight, so the “glass and aluminum” parts of the plan probably won’t fly without revision.

    A couple of days ago I sent out an e-mail to all sorts of people I knew here in the Heights, extolling the BHB, and noting my posts about images from the Municipal Archives.

    I note the continued inability to send updates to people about posts here. There are ways around this, though.

    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Have ten different good architects give you designs and you will love some, hate some, and be indifferent to the rest. Just the way it is.
