I also saw him last weekend. Unlike the others, he was not avoiding human contact. A park worker was telling a couple standing next to him that he was to be removed on Monday because “he’s too friendly.” The worker said cats were abandoned in the Park by “heartless people.” If the cat was “removed,” I hope it was to a good home, or to a place that would help him find one.

I disagree. If you remove them and stop feeding them I think there will be no more cats.

I say this for a few reasons:

1. There are very few stray cats and outdoor cats in the area in general.

2. The park was cat-free for many years. (I suspect these cats settled there because someone is feeding them regularly. I also suspect the overgrown wildflower meadow is perfect habitat for them to hide.)

3. I have experience with this. A friend bought a house from a crazy cat hoarder. 65 cats lived in the house and the entire block was overrun with strays. Once the 65 we’re gone, another 25 strays trapped and removed, and the 10 pound bags of cat food were removed from the sidewalk regularly then the cats problem was solved.

“Threat to birds” So what? it is simply nature in action.
I spent my tot years in the Pierrepont playground sandbox (1960’s), with plenty of cat pooh, hypodermic needles etc. No one ever got sick or died, get a grip.

It’s not that easy, for many reasons. When cats are removed from one location (no easy task), others generally move into the vacuum. And with the cat colonies at the piers south of the Park, there is no realistic way to keep BBP free of cats. Best solution is for the colonies (which are now small) to be managed (spayed/neutered/fed) to stabilize them.

There’s another event at the Brooklyn Historical Society the weekend of the 16th-17th.

There was a Christmas Fair at the Unitarian Church a week ago which I knew absolutely nothing about. Got there literally 10 minutes before it was over. They told me they’d told The Brooklyn Paper, but no one else, alas.

They ARE a threat to the birds. Not to mention that cat food is rat food. As well as diseases in Sandbox Village and the volleyball courts as the cats use them as their litter box.

Sadly, the park is no place for cats. You’re welcome to adopt them into your home. If not, they have to go.

Hmm–that’s interesting. It’s been a while since I’ve talked to BBP about it–I gave up. But maybe they’ve had a change of heart. Would love to get them all spayed/neutered.

There are groups in the community that are willing to care for them…but BBP doesn’t want them fed because they see the cats as a threat to birds.

Have tried to work without success with BPP to trap & neuter them. BPP ignores, just wants them gone/euthanized. Mama cat had kittens in the spring. There are three there that I know of: black/white, Tortie, calico. You can e-mail me at tagnyc@yahoo if you have more info.

Something to look out for: whenever you see two or three “HMX-1″ “white tops” (Blackhawk helicopters with noticeable green and white livery), as well as two or three Chinooks (those are the ones that look like flying buses with fore- and aft rotors, as well as two or three Ospreys (aircraft with rotating propeller nacelles at the end of each wing that permit vertical landing/takeoff), it’s a signifier that the president is coming or going from the heliport. We always have fun watching (and for the last eleven months, booing).

Has anyone been down to Pier 6 in the park and noticed how many stray cats there are living there? I see at least a couple every time I jog around the center garden. Hope they find a warmer place as the weather keeps getting colder.
