Surprise, Surprise! Bossert Opening Delayed Indefinitely

According to the Brooklyn Paper, the Bossert Hotel, which has had more promised opening dates than Spinal Tap has had drummers (we noted the failure to meet a proposed opening date in the summer of 2015), has now had its opening again postponed from next month to some indefinite date next year. This was revealed when Brooklyn Heights Association Executive Director Peter Bray tried to book an event there. The Brooklyn Paper quotes Mr. Bray: “They didn’t give us a firm date when it would be opening.”

The car guy in me would say: more promises of rollout than the new Acura NSX … allegedly ready to launch for what … 6 years? For instance – the Super Bowl told us that, in 2012, it was right around the corner: https://youtu.be/CwILzKQbu38

    Baffling…

So all my “man on the street” reporting was accurate. They’re barely making progress because there’s hardly anyone working in there. I’ve seen brownstone renovations with bigger crews.

I’m guessing there’s some sort of financial difficulties and the place will get sold unfinished at a fire sale price. But I’m just guessing.

The newspaper sellers out front will probably be relieved. But I bet that also will probably hold back any tenants from moving into the old Starbucks space too – the block won’t be as desirable to potential retailers.

    yay!

I foggily recall hearing that the old Starbucks location was lying vacant because the landlord is very difficult or unreasonable or something. Regretfully I can’t substantiate any further. But no doubt the location is already desirable. It’s a great space IMO.

That was reported here by a few when they first moved. That it’s sat empty for multiple years confirms it. I’d love to see a place like Greene Grape Provisions move in.

Wow. Topic drift, ain’t it wonderful! In this case, no. Posts about the old Starbucks bear no relation to this at all, except maybe vacant hotel = vacant store?

  • StudioBrooklyn

Selfishly, I’d like to see a gallery or arts center move in, but I know this isn’t realistic for a number of reasons, difficulty with the landlord among them–and from a purely money standpoint I can’t blame a NY building owner for preferring blue chip tenants like food or retail chains.

  • Jorale-man

Yes, it’s strange when even a Starbucks can’t/won’t pay the rent on a prime city block. My theory was that the Bossert will bring new foot traffic to the area and spur demand for new retail. But we may be looking at that ugly empty space for a while to come.

a few months ago, on a school night, there was a party on the Bossart roof that went on well past midnight, had a lot of attendees and was blasting music. Not sure what the party was for but it was clearly illegal as the place is a construction zone. The dozen or so men that were hanging in the lobby were quite obstreperous when asked (by the many neighborhood people) to lower the music which was quite clearly in violation of sound ordinances. One guy was yelling how it was his building and he could do what he wanted.

I suspect they’re slow-walking it while they try to get a buyer. From the looks of the ground floor, they’ve finished stuff up to the point where you need to decide on final finishes – which might limit its appeal…

I have heard rumors the building is owned by a Hasidic group?

  • Dw718

i believe that is true. the group of revelers i referred to above were Hasidic

  • brooklynbull

Whoever owns’ it — having a late night music-blasting bacchanal terrorizing your neighbors was a clear sign that this poor building was not going to open anytime soon. Having religion involved only makes it skivier.
Not a good omen for anyone who wants to make the place actually viable.
