Robber Hits Careland Pharmacy on Clark

According to Brooklyn Paper’s “Police Blotter”, on Sunday a man took nine packs of razors and six packs of headphones from a display case in a store your correspondent has identified as Careland, on Clark Street between Henry and Monroe Place (photo). The Brooklyn Paper story quotes a worker at the store as saying the robber held a knife, said “Leave me alone before you get cut up,” and left with the stolen goods.

Probably the most business they’ve done all week.

Careland is a true “Mom and Pop” operation. I go there first before subjecting myself to the airless, suffocating, antiseptic, corporate alternatives– CVS, Rite Aid, or Duane Reade. Maybe my more liberal-minded neighbors will consider doing the same to show the people at Careland that we consider this crime a violation of our community. The people in Careland are friendly and helpful. Unlike the other corporate-run pharmacies (ever hear the “SECURITY
WALK THE FLOOR” robot at Duane Reade, an announcement that is regularly broadcast in the store to spook would-be shoplifters? It’s Orwellian.) So I’m not surprised that this small and innocent little shop was violated by a violent, knife-wielding criminal. By the way, can our friendly reporter provide a more detailed description so residents can be on the look out? Something more descriptive than “a man?” As for Arch Stantion, whose comment below must’ve been typed out in his mother’s basement, let’s hope Arch finds a job so he can help mom pay the rent.

Sorry to disappoint you, I don’t live with my Mom and I’m employed, as well as an employer.
The joke was based on the fact, every time I walk by the place it’s devoid of customers.

I never knew Careland was a mom & pop. I will go there more often, now. And you got it wrong with Arch, it’s his grandma’s basement.

Sad. Is this the first holdup on that block? I’ve never before heard of one.

I’ll check out Careland, though I’ve used the pharmacy at Gristedes since the one on Henry (and Orange? Cranberry?) closed years ago..

Wonder if there was a Brooklyn Bridge Park connection. Glad no one was hurt at any rate.

That was the Parrish Pharmacy, at the corner of Orange and Henry, there since the late 1800s. Their pharmacist went over to Grostede’s when it closed. I understand in the 1920s they had their own brand of prophylactics. You can read about its history, and see a photo, here:

I have to second what Freethinker said about Careland. The staff are super friendly and helpful. And it’s so clean. It’s a pleasure to shop there. It’s such a different experience from shopping at the grungy CVS on Love Lane.

Sorry to hear this, but they’ve become very disorganized lately. They seem unable to fill a routine prescription due to a supplier problem. I’ve had to call them several times when they haven’t called me back. I like to patronize locally owned stores, but will probably need to switch my prescriptions to another business. This has been going on for over a week now without resolution. Last Saturday I was told to call next Thursday ! when someone will be in that could solve the problem. Fortunately, there’s no rush, but….

Try City Chemists on Montague, Excellent service, most scrips filled in five minutes or less.

Really not sure what Freethinker’s on about, I’ve actually gotta go with Arch on this one…

Before the video store closed, there was an attempt of a hold up. But apparently there is a guy who goes to the pharmacies, MomPop, big Corporate alike. On Wed someone came in and snatched a bunch of razor blades at CvS as well.
