    BULLETIN…BULLETIN…BULLETIN..
An apparently crazed driver late this evening drove his car at high speed onto the promenade packed with Sunday night crowd. The wild scene started with the driver variously described as a thin male in his 20’s or 30’s, entering the park
At the Pierrepont St Entrance causing a loud crash from contact with the curb. The driver proceeded at high speed onto the promenade turning in the direction of the bridge causing strollers by the dozens to have to dive to safety The driver slowed briefly then proceeded at renewed high speed to either of the two exits beyond Clark Street again causing those on the famed walkway, including a group of tourists from Japan, to have to run for any cover available. The driver made good his escape, dispute several outraged neighbors who attempted to run down Columbia Heights in an attempt to block the drivers escape.

But what happened AFTER the incident, many say, was even more upsetting. During the incident, many were seen calling 9-11, only to find that np matter how many times they called, no police responded. One of the callers. to 9-11, a vetteran of the 84 pct. Block watcher program, called 9-11THREE TIMES over an hour’s time. Others were told that the Promenade was not in the police locator system and the dispatcher needed a digital address to respond.

The incident: happened at 8:50 PM. People at the scene who were now a large crowd, waited at the scene for police. As the time passed repeated calls were made without results. Finally, when the crowd had all but gone, at 10:33 PM (!) a sole patrol car on routine patrol happened by and was flagged down by those neighbors still present. “Where were you?” several frustrated residents almost shouted. “We never got any calls”(!!!) the officers in car 4317 politely said. They checked with 9-11 while neighbors listened and 9-11 indeed maintained they had no such calls in the system! Most at the scene shook their heads while others made a series of unprintable comments while police began a canvass of those still on the promenade for a possible witness who took down a license plate or better saw the driver.

” This shows how close to anarchy we are in this city” one outraged neighbor at the scene said.

Thanks for letting us know. Seems like this must have happened shortly after we left (see the photo of the sunset I posted).

Did any readers catch video or photos of the incident? License plates? Can verify WSW’s account?

WSW – any follow up on this today? Did anyone manage to get a picture of the vehicle?

THAT’S what everyone is trying to find; someone who has a picture or at least a partial plate number. I and two friends tried to survey possible routes of exit and any possible building cameras along each route.
One of the local group is printing a flyer asking for witnesses and any images. Even if you don’t get evidence, that shows neighborhood reactivity, awareness and intolerance of nonsense. Don’t think that doesn’t send a clear message to the street….

But when 9-11 doesn’t work and there is not a quick response and canvass, its a basic reality, witnesses and possible evidence are
    lost….

In light of recent events on Atlantic…can you confirm with any certainty that no one was hurt?

  • Willow Street Watch

No, because I had to remain at Pierrepont and Col Hts because that’s the location we summoned police to. I had access to the promenade and looking down I saw no injured and no one repotted injuries. But of course, if someone was hit and remained ambulatory enough and chose as many do to go to the emergency room of their choice (read Weill-Cornell or Langone, unless they’re injured and delusional) theyres no way to really know…Er, remember, if you’re transported by EMS in the Heights now, youre going to Brooklyn hospital. (Good luck and good bye). So, no, ‘m not at all sure no one was injured.

But the roots of BOTH the promenade AND the Atlantic outrages are the same.

First and foremost a lack of police visibility and enforcement. Second, some of the attitudes today…some of the wild animals who frequent the Smith Street to Hicks area of Atlantic Ave seem to think they’re in some personal playground where you do what you can get away with. The same attitude you get on Euclid Avenue..so its attitude and the lack of seeing people being pulled over which made both incidents possible…and inevitable.

Alas, our little slice of Moscow thuggery is gone. The occasionally brawling drivers were quite atmospheric, however. Once I saw a couple of them go at each other with tire irons, and one of them tried to attack me, because I “stole his parking spot” (he was trying to move 2 cars at once) Good riddance.
