Last Minute Weekend Suggestions: Brooklyn Heights and Nearby

The U.S. Coast Guard’s tall square rigged training ship Eagle (photo) will arrive at Pier 5, Brooklyn Bridge Park this Friday, July 31. She will be open for free tours on Friday from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, August 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, August 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Other Park events this weekend include a Hindu Lamp Ceremony at the Pebble Beach near the Main Street entrance in DUMBO on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. On Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to noon Pier Kids, in conjunction with Volunteers for Wildlife will present Birds of Prey. Following that, from noon to 1:00 p.m., there will be art activities. All of the above events are free. We presume Smorgasburg will be back on the Pier 5 uplands on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; we know that you may take a free guided park tour by going to the Pier 1 entrance near the foot of Old Fulton Street at 11:00 a.m. Sunday. At Bargemusic on Friday evening at 8:00 pianist Olga Vinokur will play works in honor of the centennial anniversary of Alexander Scriabin’s death. On Saturday evening at 8:00 and Sunday afternoon at 4:00 the Manhattan Symphonie, under the direction of Gregory Singer and featuring Mark Peskanov on violin and Alexander Mishkaevski on viola, will present works by Vivaldi and Mozart. There’s more information and buy tickets here. Saturday afternoon at 4:00 there will be a free, family oriented “Music in Motion” concert, co-sponsored by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy. Doors open at 3:45; first come, first seated.
