Last Minute Weekend Suggestions: Brooklyn Heights and Nearby

A replica of the slave ship Amistad (photo above from her 2006 visit to the Battery Park City marina), built for Steven Spielberg’s 1997 movie about the rebellion aboard her in 1839, and subsequent trial in a U.S. court, arrived today at Pier 5, Brooklyn Bridge Park, near the foot of Joralemon Street. Amistad will be open for free tours Friday afternoon, October 2 from 2:00 to 6:00, and on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. More details here. Sunday. Other events in the Park this weekend include Baylander tours at Pier 5 Saturday and Sunday, and Smorgasburg, which will be on the Pier 2 uplands Sunday.

On Sunday at 1:00 p.m. the Brooklyn Historical Society, in association with Archtober, will present a “This is Brooklyn” tour in BHS’s landmarked building at 128 Pierrepont Street (corner of Clinton). The tour is free with museum admission and for BHS members. There will be another tour on Sunday, October 19. More information here.

Bargemusic has a concert this evening (Thursday, October 2) starting at 8:00 featuring works of Brahms performed by Stefan Jackiw on violin and Anna Polonsky on piano. Sunday afternoon’s concert at 4:00 will feature works by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, performed by violinist Mark Peskanov, soprano Jane Leibel, and pianist Maureen Volk. There’s more information and buy tickets here. Saturday afternoon at 4:00 there will be a free, family oriented “Music in Motion” concert. Doors open at 3:45; first come, first seated.

On Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. the Brooklyn Women’s Exchange, 55 Pierrepont Street, will continue its 160th anniversary celebration with a craft fair lasting from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at which you’ll be able to meet some of the artisans who consign goods to the store; see demonstrations of spinning, quilting, and weaving; and sample the Exchange’s new selection of “locavore” foods. Don’t forget the 43rd annual Cranberry Street Fair, Cranberry Street between Hicks and Willow on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

    Does anyone know if you need to sign up for a tour of the Amistad? It says tours are 45 minutes long but doesn’t list any times they begin. I don’t want to show up and then have to wait an hour. I click add, but then all it does it add the entire day to my calendar for the tours.
