In the short time i’ve lived here, I’ve seen too many accidents on Atlantic. I can’t wait for driverless cars.

  • Drew

Driverless cars…that can’t discern pedestrians, construction zones, traffic cops, rain, snow, etc, etc, etc.

  • BrooklynCoffeeLover

“We’ve taught the vehicle to recognize and navigate through construction zones.”

  • Drew

Didn’t read the article, eh? It’s ok, I did it for you:
‘Chris Urmson, director of the Google car team, acknowledges that the cars still had a lot of navigation problems. Illustrating the point, he told MIT Technology: “I could contruct a construction zone that could befuddle the car.”‘

  • BrooklynCoffeeLover

I could do the same thing for a car with a driver. It happens every day.

  • DIBS

Almost slways the sameride in most livery cars. They clearly haven’t been driving long. They can’t anticipate traffic more than one car ahead of them, inappropriate accelerating and braking, all sorts of stupidity. Just mostly all bad drivers who think they own the road.

  • Jorale-man

That intersection always strikes me as really dangerous. Cars speed through there and some pedestrians will stand way out into the street, tempting fate. It’s a bad mix. It’s a prime spot for one of de Blasio’s proposed speed cameras.

Was the driver wearing a towel around his head?

  • cindy s

Well, the FIRST thing you should do is look at what
Well run NGO is pushing any idea or new concept..
..and there they get their money…the unmanned
Vehicle assn is a VERY well financed org in VA.
What about reducing drivers to passengers?,
    Privacy?, BIG liability issues?….don’t ask!!!

The Post has some more info. It appears the car service was hit by a truck and lost control. One woman critically injured:

  • Quinn Raymond

Absolutely infuriating. We need more speed and red light cameras, and we need the NYPD to start prosecuting negligent drivers under existing laws.

We also need stricter state laws– you can kill a pedestrian who is in the crosswalk and has the light and it just became a misdemeanor this year. That means a $250 fine and at worst 30 days in jail.

    Absolutely infuriating.

  • petercow

But how can this happen when the 84th Precinct has written 114 speeding tix YTD? That’s almost 1/2 a ticket per day!

  • David on Middagh

So the car service was turning right, from Court St. onto Atlantic, and was hit.

Now I’m wondering if the truck was traveling West on Atlantic, accelerating toward a yellow light that turned red before it could stop. (This is pure speculation on my part.)

  • Ann B Chapin

I am curious. What is the definition of livery vs car service, or are they considered the same??

  • Martin L Schneider

We walk on Court nearly every day. Attention 84th precinct. Have you noticed that huge volume of pedestrian and vehicle traffic on Court from say Montague to Atlantic and beyond.

Wouldn’t it be a good idea to assign a few policemen to this heavily trafficked zone every single day during the heaviest hours? Their presence alone would deter the traffic-blocking double parkers, the light jumpers, the horn blowers.

How about it 8-4? How about putting your people to work where the traffic law breakers congregate to the menace and risk of pedestrians?

  • cindy s

Mr Raymond above is 100% CORRECT!
Anyone who has even temped in any
Law firm has seen an unending line of
The seriously injured who have been hit
First by today’s harsh no fault limits on
Health care But second their cases are
greatly damaged by the NYPD Accident
    Investigation “service” doing their typical
Least as possible report on the event.

Tell you what all car services/black
Cars and “livery” cabs should contribute
To special victims fund…perhaps a dollar
A ride given the absolute mayhem siza
Able parts of their “industry” has been
    involved in. Same as restaurants;
There should be a dollar a meal contribute
But I on towards a victim fund for the
Many pedestrians hit by the bike
    Delivery darlings…for cars, there’s NO
    Substitute for prosecution and serious
    Jail time.

Instead I see them ticketing incessantly on Clinton. Every hour, on the hour. I’ve seen, frequently, at least 3 cops walking a 4 block span all day writing parking tickets….

  • Heidi

I couldn’t agree more with all of you in this discussion. Is there any word on the innocent pedestrian in this crash?
