BHB: What did you learn from Donnell?
Johnson, BPL: Look, it’s not rocket science. We’ve promised the community that we are going to have an interim library—the first time that the [Brooklyn Public] Library has ever done that. We close branches all the time for repairs. We should really always have something closed because we should be taking continual care of [our infrastructure]—it’s because of the funding issues that we don’t. But this is the first time that we will ever have an interim space, and [it’s] part of the contract with the developer.
I understand that [Donnell] is a rallying cry, but there’s a lot of ways it could have been avoided, and we’re trying to avoid it.
BHB: Where do you think Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams stands on this issue?
Johnson, BPL: I don’t think it’s true that the Borough President’s come out against the sale. Depends upon who the Borough President’s talking to. This project can do a lot for the community, including affordable housing units, so I think to say that any elected official is against it is not exactly right. It’s really about what each elected official’s constituents can benefit from and that’s exactly what the ULURP process is about. It will be [an] interesting and educational process for me, but at the end of it we’ll have a really great project.
