Get Ready Brooklyn Heights! Fireworks Returning to the East River

The New York Observer is reporting that, according to “sources,” Mayor de Blasio will be on the Promenade at 2 pm today to announce that Heights residents will once again have a prime view of 4th of July fireworks.

The NY Daily News confirms the return of the Macy’s spectacular:

“I’m thrilled that, after years of working with Macy’s and my colleagues to make this a reality, the fireworks will return to the East River this year!” de Blasio said. “Now even more New Yorkers will get to take part in this extraordinary celebration, against the backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge, the harbor and our skyline.”

Macy’s first moved the fireworks to the Hudson in 2009 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s voyage of discovery up the river, and has kept them there ever since.

De Blasio, a Brooklyn a resident, issued a statement in 2013 supporting moving the fireworks back to the East River.

“The outer boroughs aren’t an afterthought,” he said.

BHB has confirmed that the mayor will hold a press conference here today at 2pm according to his official schedule released on Sunday.

Our man in the NYS Senate Daniel Squadron released this statement today:

I have two pieces of very exciting news to share with you:

Later today I’ll officially announce, along with Mayor de Blasio and my colleagues, that Macy’s 4th of July fireworks show will finally be moved back to the East River.

This has been a long time coming. The last time Macy’s held its fireworks show on the East River was in 2008. In 2009 it was moved to the Hudson to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s voyage; it has stayed there since, for New Jersey to enjoy — until now.

I’m pleased to have pushed for this with Public Advocate de Blasio for years and now — more fruitfully — to partner with Mayor de Blasio and Macy’s to get it done. I look forward to enjoying the show with millions more New Yorkers in more boroughs for years to come.

I like the fireworks, just that, for years we had to endure hordes of would-be spectators and their litter, without being able to enjoy the show.

Looking forward to BBP getting trashed with litter, not just the Promenade…

About time the East River got the fireworks back. Way to go DiBlasio!
