What’s up with the helicopters hovering over Bklyn Hghts now? I fail to understand why they need to do this and begin at 6am. This has to stop.

  • David on Middagh

The one I see has a camera.

  • Skúli

Apparently an oil trck has flipped over on the BQE at Atlantic. How many helicopters does it take to cover the story?

  • Jorale-man

I thought there were supposedly rules now about the helicopters flying directly over the Heights and they were required to stay out over the water. Maybe I’ve got that wrong but it would seem to be a reasonable solution.

  • Jorale-man

I see there appears to be something moving into the long empty storefront on the NE corner of Joralemon & Clinton Sts. Anyone know what it might be? Sure would be nice if it was another grocery store but I’m definitely not holding my breath.

  • David on Middagh

I identified the News 12 chopper, for one. And here’s some incriminating confirmation:

This may be for those tourist helicopters. With emergency/news, I think it’s a different story, but I could be wrong.

  • BrooklynCoffeeLover

Geez. I hope that driver is okay.

  • ColumbiaHeightster

Seriously? There was an overturned truck that shut down the entire BQE for miles. Accident happened at 5:30, hence the 6am helicopters that were disturbing you. Kind of a big deal. “This has to stop.” Get over yourself.

    Children Fun vs Dog Owners
It seems that a 311 report has been made about the dog owners who routinely violate the ban on dogs romping on the astro turf in Cadman Park. About ten such owners can be seen most mornings before 9:00 am.
This perfectly reasonable ban on dogs is absolutely necessary to protect the vulnerable children using the turf who are often barefoot and happily rolling around on what must be counted on as a safe, sanitary and clean play area.
Let’s hope the dogs are soon gone and the turf is safe once again.

  • Heights Poster

I could be wrong, but I believe that the entire Brooklyn War Memorial Park is a designated off-leash zone from 9PM until 9AM, so there is no ban that these owners are violating (assuming they are there before 9AM that is).

  • DIBS

Do you really think that ANY surface in a public park can be “counted on as a safe, sanitary and clean play area?”

  • Kenji Takabayashi

Does anyone know about the availability of Verizon Fios, or other high speed internet services? My building (55 Poplar) is time warner only it seems and I got rid of cable a bit ago in favor of DSL ~ now I am seeking faster alternatives. Thanks!

  • MonroeOrange

‘it seems that a 311 report has been made’…..how would you know that?…unless of course you made the report?

and i think dogs are allowed on the grass at night, everyone that runs their dogs on the grass at night are responsible dog owners and walk their dogs before they let them go on the grass…I have never seen a dog pee or poo on the grass.

  • Martin L Schneider

Wrong. Dogs are specifically forbidden on the turf.

  • MonroeOrange

How about the rats i see running across the turf at night? are they forbidden too? Maybe you should call 311 on the rats too!

If you called 311, which is obvious you did, own up to it! you strike me as the type of individual who has 311 on speed dial!

  • Ernie

The Citi Bikes in front of Citibank on Montague Street have been removed.

  • Martin L Schneider

I own up to having two grandsons ages nine and six who love to run and play on the turf.

  • AnnofOrange

Yes…dogs are forbidden on turf. Signage is clear that dogs are allowed off leash during off leash hours (9P to 9A) and only on the North end of the park. I am a dog owner who respects these rules, which are quite reasonable.

  • MonroeOrange

not reasonable at all…the other part of the park is quite desolate at night. Let the dogs run free, they aren’t relieving themselves on the turf…who cares where they run! I see humans spit on the turf while playing games all the time there. That is much more harmful than a dogs paw!

  • MonroeOrange

so you better ask all the St. Anns kids to stop spitting on the turf then! or you can continue to call 311, your choice!

KT: Verizon’s “availability checker” says no FiOS at your address, unfortunately, just DSL maxing at 3-7 Mbps. (I use the 1 Mbps DSL, tho’ they keep pestering me to upgrade it.)

  • StoptheChop

Yes, the 300 (not a typo) low-flying, noise-polluting daily tourist helicopter flights that, when the helicopters aren’t idling at the Wall St Heliport, hug the BBP Piers, cross Governor’s Island, hug Red Hook, cross Manhattan at 155th Street to go to Yankee Stadium or hover before turning around at 79th St, hug the NJ side of the Hudson River, etc, are technically over water instead of over Brooklyn Heights when they fly down Buttermilk Channel at 300-500′. That’s been ok for some, but it’s proven, in practice, to be far from reasonable for all. The April 2010 solution turned out to be a big game of whack-a-mole, which many elected officials and community groups are trying to fix. http://www.stopthechopnynj.org/

  • TeddyNYC

I’ve been waiting for FiOS to reach my block for a few years now. It looks to me like Verizon is slowing or even stopping its FiOS expansion/build-out here. Maybe they feel wireless (LTE/5G) will be a better, cheaper option to deploy in a high-density area like this. Of course, LTE can have trouble penetrating some buildings so I’m not sure if it’s the best option for customers. You also have data caps. The wait continues…

  • Kenji Takabayashi

Hey David, much obliged. I do have the high end DSL, but it’s still fairly slow comparably. I guess I’ll play the waiting game.

  • Kenji Takabayashi

Funny how their initial rollout statement included Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill as primary target spots in 2008. Oh well.

  • Eddyde

It is a reasonable, well posted, rule for the use of the turf field. I never let my dog run free that field, yet I have seen others do so and yes, I have seen dogs eliminate there.

  • Eddyde

Anyone who allows their dog on the field is NOT a responsible dog owner. As a dog owner, I know full well it is next to impossible to prevent an off-leash dog from eliminating where when they want.
BTW, Spit is not nearly as toxic a dog feces.
