    Carpetbagger???
Wow, the average age of BH residents is older than I thought if they’re using terms from 1866.

  • cobble

Well, he could have called us Scallywags!

“In United States history, “carpetbaggers” was a negative term Southerners gave to opportunistic Northerners who moved to the South during the Reconstruction era, between 1865 and 1877. They often formed alliances with freed slaves and scalawags (southern whites who were Republicans).” Wikipedia

Cobble, you were a savvy 6-yr old gentrifer.

  • cobble

Hmm, perhaps my parents were carpetbaggers. Or perhaps they simply needed a home for their family in a neighborhood they could afford at the time.

  • jessibaby

Cobble, you raise an interesting question: do you need the intent to benefit from living in an emerging hood in order to be considered a gentrifier.

  • cobble

I think my intent, as a child, was to make sure my parents kept buying me food and clothes. Mercenary, I know, but it can’t be helped.

  • daveinbedstuy

What’s wrong with the clock on this site.

Cobble, I may be wearing a “catcher’s mask” later. I’m feeling a lot better…just in time to go off on vacation tomorrow

  • cobble

DIBS, I don’t want to know about it. But I’m very glad you’re feeling better for your long weekend vacation.

Btw, We’re having a discussion. Do you consider yourself a fan of carpetbagging or gentrification?

  • daveinbedstuy

carpetbaggers took advantage of people. Gentrification has a goal of raising the overall level of a neighborhood. Most people these days don’t know what “carpetbaggers” were and as we’ve discussed before, gentrifiction has pros and cons and can mean a lot of different things.

So, not a fan of carpetbagging and the incidence of gentrification makes a big difference.

    How’s that????

  • cobble

Nicely done, DIBS. Tomorrow we’ll be discussing the pros and cons of posting on various blogs.

  • jessibaby

Dave, what if there was a flip tax put on brownstones? the proceeds could go to the local 501(c)(3) of your choosing.

  • daveinbedstuy

How about we discuss fleet week???

  • jessibaby

    I don’t like a man in uniform.

  • daveinbedstuy

Define “flip tax” jessi. I assume it would be a holding of just 2-3 years maybe. What about someone who hads no intention to “flip” but for unforeseen circumstances has to sell????

Besides, I’m a Republican and against most all taxes and tax increases.

  • daveinbedstuy

It’s just nice packaging, jessi. Besides, the objective is to get them out of uniform.

  • cobble

I love a man in a uniform, and, well, we know how DIBS feels about them!

  • jessibaby

Dave, dunno, really. Just thought it could be a way for the community itself to get a little back from the real estate gains of individuals. I know you already pay taxes on the gain – but it would be cool to keep it local.

As for unforeseen situations, how does that work in a co-op? Do they care?

  • cobble

Oh, sorry for that weird blather at the beginning, but it’s still a great song.

  • daveinbedstuy

Is there a raunch hour over here or have most of the BH residents already gone out for the “early bird specials?”

  • cobble

I don’t think they ‘do’ raunch hour over here in B Heights. Didn’t you see the way they ran the Blue Diamond people out of town!? Better just to not talk about sex, maybe it’ll just go away! ; )

  • jessibaby

Early bird gets the worm. Never thought of it like that before.

  • daveinbedstuy

jessi, do you know what an “early bird special” is???

On another note, Bobby Jindal (sp?) the Gov of Louisiana is pretty hot. Indian subcontinent background.

  • jessibaby

Dave, I don’t. Fill me in (no hetero)

  • daveinbedstuy

it’s just an early seating for dinner for old people…sometimes referred to as “blue hait specials.” Usually have to be there by 6:30…i think it’s mostly in northeast resorts like cape cod and elsewhere

  • cobble

    “blue hait specials”

Blue Plate Specials, DIBS. Please try to be more careful! : P

  • jessibaby

Dave, duh, I know that! I was hoping for a double entrendre. Or are you just trying to act coy for our new friends here at BHB?

  • daveinbedstuy

    “blue hair specials” cobble

  • cobble

My hair isn’t blue, now, I mean it was when I was younger, but it’s not now. And it won’t be later, if I have anything to say about it!

  • daveinbedstuy

I hate this Retasis commercial…the woman sounds soooo pathetic.. “A prescription???? What do i have????” in a very annoying, whinny voice

  • cobble

I’m out! Have a good night!
